Simon leaving 'Idol'

Simon Says: "I'm bored", so he's jumping ship.

Good for him, seriously. I watched this season's "Idol" for the first time this past Tuesday. Literally the only reason I watch that show is for his reactions, clever comments and the fantastic way those hotshot singers' faces fall (or better yet, tear up) after he rips them apart with acidic criticism.  It's not nice, but it's the truth, and it makes for great television.

He was so clearly bored, parroting what the other three judges said with every comment.  The performances were extraordinarily boring, it's true, so there wasn't much to say. But still. YAWN.

Mini-rant: "American Idol" is such a huge waste.  I hate how they drag out those episodes to 2 hours, with what could be done in literally a 30 minute show.  So annoying.  Not to say the artists that come out of the show aren't talented, and would not have necessarily had the chance to make it big without the show, but man.

Side note: This just supports my feeling that literally anybody, whether or not they have an ounce of musical talent, can "make it" (even if just for a minute) in the music world. If you have someone that is willing to throw enough money at you and others (ever heard of payola, eh?) then yes, you too can be a STAR.

Side note to the side note + newsflash: Yes Britney lip synchs onstage for a reason, and her real boyfriend's name is Auto-Tune.  Yet somehow she's still putting out records and is on the radio. How DOES she do it? Golly gee.

Anyway back to Simon...he also says he's bringing the show "X Factor" to the States, and seems excited about that.  We'll just have to see if it's worth checking out and he gets his spunk back.

"If I tape an 11-hour day, guess which parts end up on air. Not the bits when I'm pleasant, but the parts when I'm obnoxious."

"The object of this competition is not to be mean to the losers but to find a winner. The process makes you mean because you get frustrated. Kids turn up unrehearsed, wearing the wrong clothes, singing out of tune and you can either say, 'Good job,' and patronize them or tell them the truth, and sometimes the truth is perceived as mean."  - - Simon Cowell
