American Idol: Where 2nd place is (often) better than 1st

Let's face it, tonight's American Idol finale was 90% about Simon's departure (or "retirement" as they referred to it), 8% about the superstar guest artists including Chicago, Alanis, X-Tina and Janet Jackson, and 2% about announcing the winners.

Well anyhoo, Lee DeWyze is our newest American Idol (...cue the confetti). Ehh, I'm looking in my crystal ball and just seeing a lot of fog.
Please, anyone that doubts me just watch the clip of Crystal and Alanis and then compare that with the tepid (and pitchy) performance by Lee with Chicago (videos at bottom of post), and honestly tell me which one rocked more.

Crystal will do really well, and here's the proof. History will repeat itself. American Idol winners (and the REAL winners), by season:

SEASON 1: 2002
Winner: Kelly Clarkson
2nd Place: Justin Guarini
Ah, the first season, back to a purer, simpler time.  One of the very few times they and America got it 100% right.  Kelly Clarkson has released 4 albums to date, won two Grammy Awards. Her 4 albums have sold over 10.5 million copies in the United States.
And what about Justin? Not much to report. We can only hope he still has the big hair.

Side-note: The other big winner and superstar to come out of Season One was Ryan Seacrest. Remember way back then when there was Ryan and some guy that looked like a hamster co-hosting? His name was Brian Dunkleman.

SEASON 2: 2003
Winner: Reuben Studdard
2nd Place: Clay Aiken - Clearly the real winner. There are certain benefits to, say, being able to fit in a single airline seat.
Where are they now??
Clay: epitomized the role of Sir Robin in Spamalot on Broadway from Jan 2008-Jan '09. Not sure what he's been up to since then.
Reuben: Have absolutely no idea, but I would like to see him on Biggest Loser in 2011, lose 100 lbs or so with Jillian Michaels, then do Dancing with the Stars in 2012. That would be awesome.

SEASON 3: 2004
Winner: Fantasia Barrino
2nd Place: Diana DeGarmo
Quite simple: Fantasia's first two albums alone garnered more than 7 total Grammy nominations.
Sources report that Diana is still very cute.

SEASON 4: 2005
Winner: Carrie Underwood
2nd Place: Bo Bice
Absolutely no competition here. Carrie Underwood is second only to Kelly Clarkson as the top two most deserving Idol winners.  Her first album went 7 times platinum. There's just something to be said for country music done right.

SEASON 5: 2006
Winner: Taylor Hicks
2nd Place: Katharine McPhee
Real winner: Chris Daughtry.
Please remember that Chris wasn't even in the final 3 (3rd place was the Eliot Yamin).
His self-titled debut album became the fastest selling debut rock album in history, and is right now the 3rd most successful Idol contestant in terms of record sales, behind only Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
America was simply WRONG on that one. Point proven.

SEASON 6: 2007
Winner: Jordin Sparks
2nd Place: Blake Lewis
At 17, Jordin was the youngest winner of A.I.
She has multiple top 20 singles, won an American Music Award in 2008 and earned her first Grammy nod in '09.

SEASON 7: 2008
Winner: David Cook
2nd Place: David Archuleta
Real winner: tie. They literally both should have won. Equally very good, yet so incredibly different.
Cook's first post-Idol album was certified platinum.  Archuleta's debut single "Crush" debuted at number two on the Billboard charts.

SEASON 8: 2009
Winner: Kris Allen
2nd Place: Adam Lambert - real winner.
One word: guyliner.
We all remember the controversial and "scandalous" (as deemed by the ultra-conservative Parents Television Council) performance at the American Music Awards, resulting in the cancellation of his scheduled Good Morning America performance the next morning.
All must be rated G (or at least PG) for morning television, apparently.

SEASON 9: 2010
Winner: Lee DeWyze
2nd Place: Crystal Bowersox
My prediction for Lee: Lee is very forgettable. He will fall by the wayside, same as Taylor and Reuben.
Prediction for Crystal: Crystal will continue to succeed with her innate star power and go on tour opening for Alanis Morissette!
